A Conversation with Reindeer Guide Olli Heikkilä

To truly understand what reindeer herding means in Lapland today, we sat down with our reindeer guide, Olli Heikkilä, whose life has always been closely connected to the Arctic wilderness. As we talked beside the reindeer fence, surrounded by the silence of the forest and the gentle sound of reindeer moving through the snow, Olli shared what this traditional way of life means to him personally.

For Olli, reindeer herding is much more than a profession — it is a way of living in harmony with nature.

“It is my job, but I enjoy it because I can spend my days with animals and in nature doing many kinds of things. Every day is different,” Olli explains. “I get to experience the beauty of Lapland while working, and animals have always been close to my heart. Being with reindeer every day feels very natural to me.”

Although modern Lapland has changed over the years, reindeer continue to hold an important place in local culture and identity.

“Reindeer are still part of traditional Lappish culture and lifestyle,” Olli says. “Nowadays they are also an important part of tourism. Reindeer sleigh rides and farm visits are very popular and help people from around the world experience this way of life.”

During our conversation, Olli also spoke about some common misconceptions people have about reindeer.

“Many people think reindeer simply wander around freely and nobody takes care of them,” he laughs. “But reindeer herding involves constant work throughout the year. People are also often surprised by how intelligent reindeer are. And many visitors don’t know that reindeer lose their antlers every winter and grow new ones again during summer.”

Living so closely with nature has shaped Olli’s entire lifestyle. His connection to the land extends far beyond work.

“I basically live in nature,” he tells us. “My home is near the forest and river. I hunt, fish, and spend most of my free time outdoors. Nature is both my workplace and the place where I rest.”

Lapland’s Arctic conditions can be harsh, but reindeer are perfectly adapted to survive here. According to Olli, their physical features are remarkable examples of nature’s design.

“They have long, thin legs that are excellent for walking in snow,” he explains. “Their hooves work well in many different terrains, especially deep snow. Reindeer hair is hollow, which protects them from rain, snow, and ice. They also eat lichen and many other plants, so they can adapt to changing weather conditions.”

As the conversation came to an end, Olli reflected on what makes Lapland so special for this unique lifestyle.

“The nature here is unique,” he says while looking across the snowy forest. “Large forest areas and peaceful surroundings make Lapland the ideal place for reindeer herding and living close to nature.”
