Reindeer Safaris in Rovaniemi

Looking for a reindeer safari in Rovaniemi? A safari takes you further than a sleigh ride, with a break by the fire and time to talk with your Reindeer Guide throughout. Santa Claus Reindeer offers two, each in its own setting.

In Santa Claus Village, the Winter Adventure Reindeer Safari follows a longer route around our reindeer area, ending with warm drinks by the fire at our laavu.

At Taava Reindeer Farm, the Daytime Reindeer Experience takes a good part of the day: a safari into the surrounding forest, time getting to know the herd, a stop by the fire in our kota along the way and plenty to learn.

  • Our two-hour stay at the Santa Claus Reindeer Summer Camp was amazing and probably the most fun in the whole Santa village. Feeding the reindeer was a very funny experience and just being there with the animals relaxed us. They were so sweet! The personnel was great as well, since they showed us the indigeounus tent (kota) of the Sámi people and answered all of our questions. For us, it was also quite interesting to learn about the Finns who work there. An amazing experience! Kiitos!

  • Amazing experience, one of the ladies that worked the Johanna(spelling?) Was so sweet and informative she gave me a unique experience with the reindeer and took photos and video of me with them. I really appreciated the time she took to talk to me and let me relive my childhood!

  • I had such a wonderful experience at the Christmas Village. The atmosphere was so tranquil and immaculate—I just wanted to stay there forever. The crackling fire, the coffee brewing over it, and the seven reindeer with their three young ones made everything feel magical and calm. Thanks to Johan, Johanna, and Elina, who made my visit truly special—Johan was so kind, Johanna was incredibly helpful, and Elina added to the warmth.

  • It was a route straight out of a fairytale. The reindeer are incredible animals, and we could see that they are very well cared for by the guides. After the ride, they offered us cookies and juice. It was a magical experience.

Reindeer Safari

Safari or Sleigh Ride?

A sleigh ride, like the Reindeer Path or Forest Path, follows a compact route around our reindeer area. A safari is a slower affair: more time with the reindeer, a stop by the fire, and more room for the questions that come up along the way.

We offer two different safaris, each with its own rhythm. The Winter Adventure runs from Santa Claus Village, for guests who want more than a quick ride but are still keeping to a day in the village. The Daytime Reindeer Experience runs from Taava Reindeer Farm, further out, a fuller day at the farm that includes a safari into the forest, time with the herd, and knowledge shared by our Reindeer Guides throughout.

Prefer a Sleigh Ride, or an Evening Safari?

If a full safari feels like more time than you need, the Reindeer Path and Forest Path offer a shorter ride around the reindeer area instead. And if you’re hoping for a chance at the Northern Lights, In Search of the Northern Lights takes you out from Taava Reindeer Farm after dark, under a sky far from any city light.

Planning Your Visit

The Winter Adventure departs from Santa Claus Village, right behind the Santa Claus Office. It’s about 15 minutes by car from Rovaniemi city centre, or closer to 30 minutes by local bus 8 with its stops along the way, a good, responsible way to make the trip, check current timetables here.

The Daytime Reindeer Experience departs from Taava Reindeer Farm, about 20 minutes from Rovaniemi, with transfers included, so getting there is easy and hassle-free.

For current opening hours, see our Info page.

Layered clothing, warm boots, gloves and a hat make the biggest difference in winter, especially for children. Reindeer hides are provided in the sleigh for extra warmth, but not clothing itself.

A Reindeer Fact

As a reindeer walks, a tendon in its feet clicks softly with every step, a sound you’ll notice more and more the longer, quieter a safari gets.

We♥Reindeer

And it shows in how we work

Every reindeer is an individual. Our herd includes working reindeer, females with calves, young reindeer and older animals, all with different needs, temperaments and rhythms. For the reindeer that work with guests, working days include regular breaks and rest days, and their condition, appetite and recovery are followed closely. Training happens at each reindeer’s own pace.

We Love Reindeer is our way of describing this relationship with the animals. It means knowing them, recognising their individual needs and sharing that knowledge with our guests.
