Santa Claus Reindeer Oy, which includes Santa Claus Reindeer, Mrs. Santa Claus Christmas Cottage and Lapland Restaurant Kotahovi, aims to improve sustainability by participating in a recently launched program called Sustainable Travel Finland! This program supports Finnish travel companies to become more sustainable and ecological, thus advancing the development of sustainable tourism in Finland. The steps of the program help the companies to improve their functions gradually.
Since we don’t only want to be ecological, but to also preserve and revive the Lappish cultural heritage, such as reindeer herding tradition and Lappish food culture, committing to the values and goals of the program was easy. Therefore our company was glad to start the journey to sustainability with this program in the spring 2020.
Our first sustainability goals are to increase the use of local and seasonal ingredients in our restaurant and to become more sustainable in our operations, such as cooking, recycling, water consumption, heating and electricity usage. Another important sustainability goal for us is inclusivity: we want to maintain and further improve the wellbeing of our personnel and customers, as well as our reindeer.
Sustainability has been taken into account also in constructing all our buildings, which are built using materials such as local timber, cellulose and plant based materials. The heating of Mrs. Santa Claus Christmas Cottage is provided by geothermal energy.
